Milton Hershey

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 10 months ago

I chose Milton Hershey because Milton Hershey is one of my heroes. He is my hero because some day I would like to become a famous chef. Milton Hershey invented chocolate when he was just a teenager and I hope to invent a new kind of food/candy when I get older, too!  Milton Hershey is the reason why we have such delicious chocolate to enjoy!

There were and still are great inventers in the world today, but haven’t you always wanted to know who invented chocolate? Well there’s one name you need to know for that, Milton Hershey. Milton Hershey created a new way of making chocolate sweeter than before. He learned that adding fresh milk makes good candy.

Milton Hershey was born on September 13 in Derry, Pennsylvania in 1857. Milton’s father liked books and reading, he was also a dreamer. He was also a dreamer. Henry (Milton’s father) couldn’t seem to settle down to only one job or place to live. He moved his family so many times during his childhood that he mad it hard for Milton to get an education. But he still wanted Milton to attend school .By the time Milton was thirteen, he had already attended 6 different schools. Milton had attended a one-room schoolhouse called, “The Derry Church School”.  Fanny (Milton’s mother) was more practical, and she preferred that her son should learn a trade. Fanny and Henry came to an agreement that Milton would drop out of school to become a printer’s apprentice. Two years after that, Fanny found a different job for Milton. It was a candy making business with Joe Royer. His shop was called, “Joe Royer’s Ice-cream Parlor and Garden”. It took place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey was an apprentice to Joe Royer in 1872. Joe Royer taught his young apprentice how to make all different kinds of candies. Milton had learned that he had a special knack for making candy because his customers liked his caramels, peppermints and fudge. Milton liked candy making from the start, but he said that it was tricky because that there were no exact recipes. A few after that, Milton decided that Joe Royer had taught him all he could learn about candy making and that it was time for him to start his own candy business. Milton had tried to set up his very own candy business many times before, but it seemed that everywhere he went was just no luck at all. But every time he had failed. He knew he had a great idea and was ready and determined to make it work. He has tried in Denver Colorado, Chicago, New Orleans, and New York. It seemed that everywhere Milton went his candy business was a failure. Milton was soon broke with the lack of customers coming to his candy business. He then returned back home to Pennsylvania in 1886 His uncle Abraham refused to loan Milton any more money. Even his Aunt Mattie and mother Fanny couldn’t help him. He then, somehow, scrapped together enough money to start up yet another candy business. Milton printed fancy business cards to help advertise his candies. “M.S Hershey, Dealer in Fine Confectionery, Fruits, Nuts and more” read the cards that Milton has made. So he tried one more time for his candy business in Pennsylvania when he was only 19 years old. Success at last! The Philadelphia was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thousands of people were going to be there for the celebration, and Milton Hershey wanted to sell his candy to all of those people. Milton’s candy business was going great, but all he needed was more candy making equipment. So Milton visits the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, he purchases chocolate making equipment in 1893. In 1894, Milton begins making chocolate as well as caramels. Milton’s new candy business was going great! His caramel candies – made with fresh milk – were so great that an Englishman was so impressed with the candies; he ordered a huge supply to be shipped to England. The secret he learned in Denver had finally paid off! He then married a beautiful woman named Catherine (Kitty) Sweeney in 1898. Milton sold the Lancaster Company. He decides to make and sell only chocolates in 1900. Then Milton started to work on a new factory and even a new town for his workers in 1903. Milton was working on The Hershey Chocolate Company. It was completed in 1905. Milton’s new town is officially named Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1906. Then Milton Hershey introduced the, “Hershey Kisses”in 1907! Milton and (Kitty) Catherine Hershey built a school for orphan boys in 1909. It was called, “Hershey Industrial School”. Every thing was going great throughout the years, but then in 1915, (Kitty) Catherine Hershey died. Right after the sad and tragic death, Milton pledges his entire fortune to the Hershey Industrial School. He later renames the school to, “Milton Hershey School” in 1918. Milton has had a great and successful life, but sadly on the date of October 13, 1945, Milton Hershey died at the age of 88. He died of old age. But he will always be remembered by people all over the nation.

Later after Milton had died, the first recorded sale of Hershey’s Chocolate Company was on April 17, 1895. He perfected his own formula for milk chocolate and in 1900 began producing the Hershey Bar when he was still making candy. In Hershey, Pennsylvania, a Hershey Trust Company was built in 1905. The Milton S. Hershey Testamentary Trust makes an annual contribution to the Derry Township School District, the local public school district. Another building was made in 1907 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. IT was the Hershey Park. The Hershey Park has rollercoaster’s and carnival games. Also the Hershey Chocolate World, a visitors’ center that is open to the public and that contains shops, restaurants, and a chocolate-themed ride. The Hotel Hershey was built during the 1930’s. The Hershey Community Center was built in 1933. There are many popular buildings in Hershey, Pennsylvania, but the most popular building is the Hershey Sports Arena. It was built in 1936. The Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was built in 1963. The M. S. Hershey Foundation, endowing it with 5000 shores of Hershey Chocolate Company stock, to help fund educational cultural activities in Derry Township. Three    years later, the fund began supporting the new Hershey Junior College, which offered tuition free education to local residents and Hershey employees until its closing in 1965.

The town of Hershey continues to be a special place for its residents and a popular attraction for millions of visitor annually. The Hershey Company is the nation’s leading manufacturer of confectionery products and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts continues to provide attractions and accommodations in Hershey that exceed guests’ expectations.
